Airline refuses Manx money

PASSENGERS bound for the Isle of Man with the Easyjet airline have again had their money refused by the plane’s cabin crew.

Passenger Geoffrey Boot of Ballagarraghyn, St John’s, who was travelling back to the island from London’s Gatwick airport said he proffered a £5 to crew only to be met with a flat refusal.

Mr Boot said he and his wife were flying with the airline for the first time last week.

‘Whilst we have no complaints about the service – in fact it was punctual, polite and it is good to see some competition on the route – when we came to pay for our rations our Manx five pound note was politely declined.

‘After some discussion the supervisor came and explained it was company policy not to accept any currency that did not have Sterling written on it, despite them announcing however they could accept Euros.’

But Mr Boot added: ‘On examination of UK notes I could find no evidence of the word Sterling and as we all know a Manx pound is equal to a UK pound.

‘They further explained they would accept Scottish notes and those from Northern Ireland as if this was somehow making the situation better.’

After a similar incident occurred on the airline’s first Isle of Man flight at the end of September, they issued an apology saying the matter had been investigated and had arisen because of an error.

The statement also said arrangements had been made to advise all crews that Manx currency should be accepted on all flights.

Mr Boot added: ‘It is tempting to think this is a minor faux pas, but it is slightly insulting that Easyjet are happy to accept Euros and UK pounds on flights to the Isle of Man but will not accept our national currency.’

A spokesman for Easyjet said: ‘Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I am investigating as I thought we had resolved the earlier uncertainty with our Gatwick based crew.

‘Please assure your readers that we are addressing this as this should not be an issue and I think was a result of a genuine misunderstanding on behalf of the crew member concerned.’
