A HIGHLIGHT of the agricultural year once again takes to the fields at Great Meadow, Castletown, on Saturday July 28 and Sunday July 29.

Now in its 98th year, the Southern District Agricultural Show continues to grow each year, and attracted a record number of entries last year.

Saturday’s schedule sees judges from the Isle of Man and UK select winners from all the livestock sections who then compete for the title of Supreme Champion of the Show.

This year’s Supreme prizes cwill be presented by Tynwald president Clare Christian MLC.

Sunday’s events included classes for donkeys and children’s meg lambs, a Field to Photo challenge and entertainment including display by the madcap Purple Helmets, sheep racing and live music.

This year for the first time a one-way system will be in place for all traffic on the Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Vehicles can access the show via Cross Fourways during these hours.

And a bit of a coup this year is a giant hen which will be in the outdoor area of the DEFA stand. Apart from providing some great recipes for Manx eggs, she will be promoting a new chicken coup is being produced by the Sawmill at St John’s.

Among other products available will be planters, compost bins and herb wheels, all designed to help homeowners produce their own fresh vegetables and herbs. Other items for sale include picnic tables, horse jumps and a ‘Wendy House’. Orders for garden furniture and fencing placed at the show will attract a 10 per cent discount.

Visitors to the stand will be also able to see the electric Polaris vehicle used for many tasks on the department’s land and which is saving both money and carbon emissions.

DEFA Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: ‘I think visitors may be surprised at the diversity of work undertaken by my department, which touches many aspects of Manx life. I hope that they will enjoy the activities which we are offering this year as well as having a great day out at the Southern District Agricultural Show.’
