A DOUGLAS woman is busy cooking up support for Comic Relief.

Deirdre Hughes, who is office manager at the Isle of Man Adoption Service, originally hoped to raise £100 for the annual fundraiser by baking cakes in her spare time for family and friends in return for a donation.

But her cakes soon proved a big hit, and she has now raised £465 – and featured on the Red Nose Day website as its fundraiser of the week.

Deirdre said: ‘It started with family and friends who know the cakes and all have their favourites taking orders. It kind of snowballed.

‘I originally set my target for £100 but I quickly got orders for that so I changed it to £200 and we’re now up to £465. I have no idea where this will end!’

Most popular so far has been her lumberjack cake with apple and date, followed by carrot cake with a lemon cream cheese frosting and banana and pineapple cake with vanilla frosting.

Also on offer are banana cake with passion fruit icing and a chocolate sachertorte.

Named Deirdre’s Great Devonshire Bake Off – she lives in Devonshire Road – she explained that she watches the Comic Relief programme each year: ‘I always sit there on the night and think “I wish I had done something”.

‘This year I thought I would be organised.’

She encouraged other people to do their bit, saying: ‘I’ve been surprised by the level of support people will give you if you come up with an idea.’

Deirdre has been baking alongside training for another fundraising challenge.

She is taking part in the Liverpool Half Marathon on March 17 along with Karen Duffy and Anne Baggesen, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In fact Karen has been supporting her by running to the shops when she runs out of ingredients and helping with the washing up.

Red Nose Day is on March 15.

Since its launch in 1985, it has raised more than £800m to change millions of lives in more than 70 countries, including the UK.
