Balloon race cancelled amid environmental concerns

ISLE of Man Live at Home Schemes has taken the decision to cancel Sunday’s Balloon Race in Crosby following concerns from a number of local organisations about the impact of the balloons on the environment.

Jan Farrell from the charity said that while it had purchased only fully bio-degradable products for the race, last Friday, she had received additional advice from Dr Fiona Gell from the Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture, confirming that there could still be a potential risk to the environment, the charity therefore assured Dr Gell on Friday it now believed it would be inappropriate to stage the event.

Emma Cunningham, from The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), was very grateful to the charity. She explained that as a charity itself, the MCS

realised the importance of fundraising and awareness raising and sent best wishes to Live at Home Schemes for its future events held with these aims in mind.

Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes had been informed that biodegradable balloons would not pose a risk to the marine environment, but advice from the Marine Conservation Society and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture confirmed that biodegradable balloons could take

months to break down and in the meantime have an impact on marine life such as porpoises and turtles.

Another positive outcome is that Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes and the Department of Environment are now keen to work together to develop a

project to collect the memories of the scheme members of marine life and fishing.

Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes will now draw the ticket from those entries received for the now cancelled balloon race, and is pleased that

Dr Gell will be drawing out the lucky ticket and presenting the prize.

If, however, anyone who purchased a ticket would like a refund, contact Live at Home on 342602 and the charity will be happy to return the

money.
