MANXMAN Robin Gibb was probed by the FBI for claiming to have hired a hitman to kill his ex-wife, it has been claimed in reports.

The Daily Mail says that pop superstar Gibb, who died after a battle with cancer in May, was under investigation from US authorities after making death threats against his former spouse Molly Hullis in 1981.

The paper says the extent of the bad feeling was revealed when files were released a few days ago in the US by the FBI, under Freedom of Information laws.

According to the paper, a copy of a telegram that Gibb allegedly sent to Haymon & Walters, the London legal firm acting for Molly Hullis, in March 1981, allegedly stated: ‘I warned and warned you. The situation is now very serious. Know [sic] one walks all over me… I have had enough. I have taken out a contract. It is now a question of time.’

The Mail says the missive was sent from Gibb’s ocean-front home in Miami Beach, and the case was dropped when the legal firm and Molly decided not to press charges.

It is not known if the threats were real or had any substance to them.

Robin Gibb married Molly Hullis in 1968 and they had two children together.

Before that, in late 1967, within weeks of falling for each other, Robin and Molly were on a train that crashed at Hither Green, south-east London, killing 49 people. Robin pulled Molly out of their derailed carriage through a smashed window, according to reports.

They married a few weeks later, but after Robin became successful with the Bee Gees, they lived on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

The couple divorced in 1980 after years of living separate lives.

The Bee Gee married for a second time in 1985, to Dwina, an author and artist. They have a home in Peel but their main residence is in Thame, Oxfordshire.

In June of this year, hundreds of people turned out to pay their last respects to Gibb, who died aged 62, at his funeral in Oxfordshire.
