MHKs have failed to support a Minister’s bid to abolish the Legislative Council.

Phil Gawne’s private members’ Bill was voted down with nine votes in favour and 13 against. The Speaker Steve Rodan abstained.

Earlier, question time saw Liberal Vannin MHKs press the Chief Minister and Economic Development Minister John Shimmin over the safety of foreign registered aircraft in the wake of the Cork air crash report.

Mr Shimmin said the report does not contain any safety recommendations relating to the Isle of Man, as none of the contributory causes identified involve the Isle of Man or the ticket seller - and as a result, his department has not made any changes in policy.

And there were more heated exchanges between Lib Van Kate Beecroft and Treasury Minister Eddie Teare as the controversy over the Pinewood deal rumbled on.
