The fire service is to start a recruitment campaign in April for potential vacancies at all of its stations.

This year it has decided to hold ‘boot camps’ for the physical element of the process as 40 per cent of all applicants usually fail the physical assessment.

The sessions will enable anyone interested in joining the service to try the physical assessment and be provided with advice on how to improve their physical fitness in order to pass this test, before attending the formal physical assessment dates which will be announced when we launch our recruitment campaign.

The physical assessment familiarisation sessions or ‘boot camp’ will be held at Douglas fire station on March 1 between 10am and 4pm and on March 31, April 1, April 30 and May 1 between 6.20pm and 8.40pm.

Assessments will be run every 20 minutes with each assessment lasting about 15 minutes.

Anyone wishing to try our physical assessment will be required to wear suitable clothing. This must include long trousers or track suit pants (shorts are not permitted) a long sleeved top and appropriate footwear to undertake physical exercise.
