Coastguard rescues drifting yacht

THE Coastguard leapt into action to rescue a stricken yacht.

Douglas harbour authorities alerted the Coastguard immediate response team at about 11.30pm on Friday after a yacht broke free from its mooring and drifted in the heavy swell caused by 20 knot North Easterly winds

The Duty Harbour Master had managed to get a line to the stern of the vessel and a Coastguard rescue officer leaped aboard the boat, which was swinging violently 45 degrees to either side, to ensure that no-one was aboard.

The yacht was eventually brought alongside the Fort Anne slipway, but sustained considerable damage. The rescue team stood down at 2.30am.
