An album of photographs showing racing in the Isle of Man in the 1950s sold at auction recently for £150 – then reappeared almost immediately on the internet auction site eBay.
The pictures, many of the 1954 TT races, show scenes behind the grandstand at the end of racing as well as various locations on the course, including a rare mass start in front of the grandstand on Glencrutchery Road, Douglas.
Isle of Man Newspapers’ sports editor John Watterson said the date was probably 1954 with some of the photographs showing sections of the Clypse course which used the Creg-ny-Baa back road to Onchan. Smaller capacity bikes raced there for a number of years in the 1950s. The album was sold by auctioneers Lockdales in Ipswitch. Estimated price was £30 to £40.
Auctioneer Chris Elmy said: ‘There were internet bids, phone bids and bids in the room. There was a lot of interest.’
It is currently offered on eBay by a seller based in Norfolk. On Wednesday there were 15 bids with the price standing at £55.
