Do you remember the Winter Hill Disaster?

ARRANGEMENTS have been made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Winter Hill Disaster – the Isle of Man's worst aircraft disaster.

Events will take place on Wednesday, February 27 – exactly 50 years to the day since the plane crash at Winter Hill in Lancashire which claimed the lives of 35 Manx residents.

At midday there will be the unveiling of a memorial plaque and the planting of a tree in the Cooil y Ree Park adjacent to Tynwald Hill, St John's. Two of the survivors of the crash, Fred Kennish and Norman Ennett have been invited to carry out the unveiling.

Following this ceremony, there will be a church service in the Royal Chapel at St John, starting at 12.30pm.

This will be followed by an informal buffet lunch being provided by the Rotary Club of Douglas in St John's Methodist Church hall at 1.15pm.

The Rotary Club of Douglas has extended an open invitation to anyone who wishes to attend some or all of these events.

Although it is not necessary to reserve places at the events, it would be helpful for catering purposes if people planning to attend could notify Howard Callow on 637757 (851854 evenings) or email howard.r.callow@im.hsbc.com

In addition to events in the Island, the 50th anniversary will also be commemorated by the Rotary Club of Horwich, which is the town closest to Winter Hill, and anyone wishing to know more about events there should contact Geoff Waine on 01204 693462 or email geoff.waine@talktalk.net for further details.

A party representing the Rotary Club of Douglas will be travelling to Horwich to attend the events there and a member of Horwich Rotary Club will be present for the Manx events.
