Does the Isle of Man have a gambling problem?

THE results of the island’s first gambling prevalence survey will be presented at a public meeting on Thursday.

It will take place at 6pm at Keyll Darree Education Centre, Braddan.

The presentation is open to all members of the public and ther guest speaker is principal researcher, Melody Askari.

The event is being staged by the National Centre for Social Research and in association with the Department of Health mental health service and the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission.

GamCare Isle of Man helps people addicted to gambling.

GamCare Isle of Man and the research study has been funded by fees levied on licence holders in the island’s gambling industry, which is distributed to the service through the Gambling Supervision Commission.

In January more than 4,000 questionnaires were sent out to a random sample of addresses throughout the island. A total of 1,942 returned.

All the responses were anonymous, which afforded individuals the opportunity to respond openly and confidentially.

The aims of the study were to gather information about gambling participation, how often people gamble and what types of activities they take part in and also to identify the rate and prevalence of problem gambling on the island from those in the at risk stage, to those showing signs of dependence.

This study also aimed to identify the numbers of families and significant others who have been affected by someone else’s gambling.

A spokesman said: ‘Ultimately, GamCare Isle of Man hope that this study will help to steer the development of this new gambling support service.

‘Services can often be set up without an understanding of the nature of the problem, whereas this study was conducted at the launch of our service.

‘If we know what proportion are affected, their age groups, the types of gambling that are causing problems, then it helps us to target our services more effectively.’

Anyone who wants to discuss their own or someone else’s gambling can contact GamCare Isle of Man on 622011 or e mail gamcareisleofman@iom.com
