DoT responds to manslaughter charge against worker

THE Department of Transport has pledged to support the worker charged with manslaughter in relation to preparations for last year's TT.

The charge, brought yesterday (Thursday), relates to the death of visiting biker Alan Ronald Osborne, 59, of Rochester, Kent, who was killed when his motorcycle was involved in a head-on crash near roadworks at the Veranda on the Mountain Couse on May 14 last year.

Police have confirmed that DoT sub-foreman Brian Philip Tomlinson, 61, of Glen Vine, has been bailed to appear in court on June 24 charged with manslaughter by gross negligence.

Confirming the charge has been brought against a member of his staff, DoT chief executive Ian Thompson said: 'Whilst legal proceedings are ongoing, the department cannot comment on specific issues relating to the case.

'However, the department has offered both welfare and legal support to the member of staff since the incident occurred, and will continue to do so over the coming months until the issue is resolved.

'I can confirm that following a meeting with the Joint Secretary of the Whitley Council on April 28, 2008, a letter was sent to him confirming the issues discussed and providing the assurances that were understood to be required.

'A similar letter has been issued to each member of staff involved in TT preparation, clarifying the situation regarding insurance and legal protection during the TT, Manx Grand Prix or any other event relating to their work for the department.

'The letter also reminded staff that our involvement in motor racing is limited to highways maintenance and traffic control to maintain road safety, and does not include marshalling activities.

'We believe the letter met all the concerns that were raised at the meeting.

'I again confirm that the department will continue to support the individual involved until this matter is closed.'
