THE sheer extent of the damage done to the double garage workshop in Tuesday morning’s blaze at Riverside Industrial Estate has delayed investigations into the cause of the fire.
Major structural damage meant the first floor at the Douglas premises had to be stabilised before investigators could even reach it on Wednesday afternoon. The floor was wooden, and burnt through.
Investigations into the as yet unknown cause of the fire are likely to continue for the rest of the week.

Thanks to beefed-up fire separation measures, in the form of recently installed pink plasterboard, fire damage was restricted to the garage workshop. However, though flames did not spread, neighbouring units units suffered damage from fire crews having to break in, and also damage to electrical equipment due to flooding from hose run-off.
The environmental concern of around 250 litres of oil and other chemicals leaking toward the River Douglas was contained as fire service crews blocked storm drains, and the coastguard was called to clear the spill with vacuums and absorbent mats. Heat impingement had caused a used motor oil drum to rupture, which contaminated the hose water run off. Inquiries continue.
