EuroManx seeks winding up order in High Court

COLLAPSED airline EuroManx is seeking a winding up order in the High Court.

The company issued a petition for its own winding up on June 16.

This followed a special resolution of EuroManx shareholders on May 17, who agreed to petition for a winding up order because the company was unable to pay its liabilities.

At a court hearing on Monday, the petition was adjourned until July 10 for the Deemster to consider the matter.

EuroManx is also seeking the appointment of Mike Simpson of chartered accountant PricewaterhouseCoopers as provisional liquidator.

If the winding up order is granted, he will be deemed official receiver by order of the court, there being no full-time post of official receiver under Manx law. Once appointed, Mr Simpson will call a meeting of EuroManx creditors.

Some 70 airline staff lost their jobs when EuroManx ceased trading on May 9.

Chief Minister Tony Brown has insisted the Manx Government did 'absolutely the right thing' in extending credit facilities to EuroManx for some six months while it was effectively trading in insolvency.

And he branded the flying out of the company's remaining aircraft two minutes before the airport and its passengers were informed of the collapse as a 'deliberate act' to avoid the plane being impounded as security against the airline's debts.

No figure for the scale of these debts has yet been released but it is thought to run to at least 3 million.

There are some 40,000 creditors including the Manx government, which is owed 1.16 million in unpaid landing charges and air passenger duty and National Insurance.

Meanwhile, following a request from the Department of Transport, Flybe has today announced an extended re-booking period for EuroManx passengers along with its winter schedule.

EuroManx-booked passengers will have the opportunity to telephone and re-book with Flybe for Manchester and Liverpool flights for a further three weeks, up to and including July 21. This offer is subject to availability of seats on each flight.

The booking number remains the same and passengers can call 0871 522 6157 to re-book their seats.

EuroManx-booked passengers who are flying after October 25 can still re-book their flights, provided they call before the end of July 21. There are changes to the winter season schedule so passengers need to check flight availability.

Flybe will not be carrying EuroManx-booked London City passengers on its Luton or Gatwick flights.

Airport director Ann Reynolds said: 'Hopefully those last remaining EuroManx passengers who were awaiting news of the winter schedule can take the opportunity to get peace of mind.'
