Filming of Belle at the dockside

Filming

Filming "Belle" Castletown Quay first IOM/Pinewood production.

THE star of lavish period drama Belle, Gugu Mbatha Raw, is pictured with a fellow actor ready for filming scenes at Castletown harbour side.

A section of the former ancient capital’s harbour has been transformed into an 18th century Bristol dockside thanks to film props and creative painting.

It is one of the locations for the film, which is set in 1760 and follows the true story of a young mixed-race girl called Dido Belle, played by Gugu Mbatha Raw.

Filming of the period drama began last Monday (September 24).

It is being directed by BAFTA award winner Amma Asante and produced by Damian Jones whose previous credits include the Academy Award-winning The Iron Lady.

Alongside Gugu Mbatha Raw in the title role, the cast boasts an impressive ensemble of Britain’s finest actors, including Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Matthew Goode, Penelope Wilton and Emily Watson.

The film is expected to be the first of the many collaborations between the Isle of Man and Pinewood Studios.

It is forecast that the cast and crew of the production will inject around £1 million into the Manx economy.

The filming of Belle is taking place on the island for three weeks before it will move to Pinewood Studios in Oxford and London to complete production.

Filming has also been taking place in the west of the island, including at the quayside. Local people are playing the parts of extras.
