German parish rate to rise by a penny

THE rate for the parish of German will increase by 1 penny to 70p in the pound for the year 2013-14.

The separate annual refuse charge and refuse rate will also increase.

German Commissioners, who set the rate at the meeting of the board in January, said the increase in the general rate was to meet the rise in costs of the contributions to the Western Civic Amenity Site, in St John’s.

The commissioners said that the budget process has been dominated by the Department of Infrastructure’s decision to increase waste charges over five years with effect from April 1, 2013, after it resolved to implement the phased withdrawal of its £5.7 million annual waste disposal subsidy.

This move by the department will have significant impact on the budgets for the next five years until the 2018-2019 financial year, equating to a 360 per cent increase in costs, or an additional £175.91 per household, in waste disposal charges, said the commissioners.

For the financial year 2013-2014 the additional costs in waste disposal equates to £27.57 per household, rising to £61.49 in 2014-2015 and a portion of these increased charges will be funded from reserves and the remainder from the rate levy, the board said.

In order to meet the increased costs of the contributions to the Western Civic Amenity Site the general rate will increase by 1 penny to 70 pence in the pound. The separate annual refuse charge for domestic properties, which covers the cost of the bin collection contract, the waste disposal charge at the incinerator (Energy From Waste Plant) will have to increase significantly. Therefore, the current charge per dwelling a year of £80 will increase to £85 and the refuse rate will increase 2 pence to 44 pence in the pound, said German commissioners.

• Peel’s rate remains unchanged at 242 pence in the pound. Waste disposal per dwelling a year of £128.50 will increase to £152.

Michael’s rate will rise from 99p in the pound to £1.29

Port St Mary has also announced its rate. It will remain unchanged at 306p in the pound.

Lonan’s rate is 60p in the pound, plus a separate refuse/waste charge will be £123 per household.

Braddan’s rate is down 2p to £2.25

Onchan’s rose by 4p in the pound to 275p in the pound.
