Newly-christened the Granborghini, this madcap Manx mobility machine is gearing up to smash a world record at the end of the month.

Capable of doing 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of well over 100mph, the souped-up scooter will be hoping to make it into record books when it competes in the Pokerstars Drag and Drift event at Jurby airfield on August 31 and September 1.

It’s the brainchild of Onchan-based Garage Insanity who will not only will be attempting to secure the world record for a mobility scooter, but racing against the current world record holder for a coin operated ride – the Postman Pat Van.

The Pokerstars Drag & Drift event, organised by the Manx Drag Racing Association along with Straightliners, will be completely free to spectators although donations will be welcomed towards the MGP Helicopter fund.

To compete in either the drift or drag race, all competitors need is a safe vehicle, helmet, driving licence and as little as £40 to race for the whole day.

Ian Merryweather of the Manx Drag Racing Association said: ‘We plan to run the scooter – now named Granborghini as voted by Facebook members! – and the Pat van together on both days on the hour from 12 noon until 4pm, five runs in all.

‘But the record will fall that is for sure. The guys came along to one of our Test & Tune days last month and completed five or six runs all over 100mph – the current record stands at 72mph.

‘The Postman Pat team are also looking to improve on their record at our event. Currently set at 102mph they have been fitting some new trick parts to make the Pat van quicker!’

Also coming along from the North East of England is Mark Flavell with his 2,000bhp Saab Funny Car. Capable of accelerating from 0-180mph in 7.1 seconds, this 8,000cc Methanol burning monster is an awesome sight and sound.

Two of the UK’s top Drift racers will be over with a couple of tyre burning machines to demonstrate and teach those who enter for the event. Ian said: ‘The plan is to keep this an annual free to spectate motorsport event where two and four wheeled racers can have fun without breaking the bank.’

Sponsored by Pokerstars, JCK, Raymotors and Compressed Air Services, the event runs from 10.30am to 5pm.
