Guilty verdict in Douglas East by-election trial

THE jury has returned guilty verdicts on the two remaining defendants in the Douglas East by-election trial.

After four days’ deliberation the jury of four women and three men finally reached their guilty verdicts at 4.45pm today (Tuesday).

Gail Corrin, 40, of Cronk-y-Berry Avenue, Douglas and Kerry Louise Rothwell, 25, of Clifton Terrace, Douglas, had both denied charges of conspiring to secure proxy votes on behalf of Kevin Woodford, a candidate in the 2010 by-election.

At about 3.30pm, responding to a request from the jury, Deemster Turner spoke to them again about the meaning of the term ‘conspiracy’. Just over one hour later a verdict was reached.

Deemster David Turner said the case would be adjourned for pre-sentence reports and both will be sentenced in three weeks’ time on November 22.

They were bailed in the meantime.

Sentencing will take place on the same date of Charles Buster Lewin, 57, of Ballavitchell Road, Crosby, who entered a guilty plea at the start of the trial seven weeks ago.

Addressing the jury, Deemster Turner said: ‘You have had a very exhausting few days and you have really worked hard at it and throughout the case.

‘I hope it has been a satisfying experience to take part in the process of justice. I was not telling you a lot of guff when I told you that you are judges with a lot of responsibility.

‘Now the next part of the case is over to me. You are welcome to come back in to hear that.’

Deemster Turner told them he would exempt them from serving on a jury again for the next three years.

‘I am now going to let you go with the thanks of the government,’ he said.

Turning to the defendants, he told them all sentencing options were open.

‘I appreciate you will be exhausted and very, very upset. That is natural,’ he said.
