Heavy rain: Steam railway suspended, Mountain Road closed.

HEAVY rain has caused problems in the island today.

All Steam Railway services were suspended earlier today because of flooding. They began running again at 2pm.

Elsewhere, a landslide on the Snaefell Mountain Road has led to it being closed from the Ramsey Hairpin to Creg-ny-Baa. The road will now be shut till noon tomorrow at the earliest.

Work is meant to be carried out on the road today before the Manx Grand Prix begins. The first practice race is due tomorrow, with roads closing from 5pm.

Meanwhile, large amounts of standing water are causing hazardous conditions for drivers throughout the island.

The Lhoobs Road from its junction with The Eairy to its junction with the Archallegan Road was closed due to flooding.

Adrian Cowin from the Met Office said: ‘The overnight heavy rain caused some localised flooding on the Island this morning, but it also brought our rainfall total at Ronaldsway Airport for the summer period (June, July & August) to 334mm so far. This beats the previous record of 330mm from 1985, and there’s still more rain to come later today and at times through the rest of this month.

‘Most parts of the British Isles have had an unusually unsettled summer with areas of low pressure giving often windier, duller and wetter conditions.

‘This has been caused by the North Atlantic jet-stream being further south than normal. The jet-stream is the strong band of high altitude wind that controls the development and movement of pressure systems.

‘In the summer it would normally be located to the north & northwest of Scotland, but this year it has stayed over or near the southwest and south of Ireland, Wales and England, but sometimes over the Bay of Biscay. It has brought the generally cloudier skies, spells of showers and longer periods of rain with occasional heavy bursts causing localised flooding at times as water runs off fairly saturated ground. There has been record-breaking rainfall in many regions since June, including on the Isle of Man.’
