Houses evacuated as fire hits industrial estate

THE fire service is monitoring potentially dangerous cylinders after a fire on the Balthane Industrial Estate in Ballasalla tonight (Monday).

Houses nearby have been evacuated as a precaution.

The fire took hold at Classic Car Restorations earlier this evening.

The premises are believed to contain oxyacetylene cylinders, which can become dangerous if exposed to heat.

It is usual practice to cordon off an area around them so they can cool down if a fire breaks out.

Part of the main road through Ballasalla was closed for about three hours while emergency services dealt with the fire.

The road, which was closed between the roundabout at The Whitestone pub and the airport roundabout, has now re-opened.

Balthane Road is still closed.

Any residents in the area that have any queries should contact the emergency services control room via police headquarters on 631212.
