Increase in unemployed

THERE has been an increase in the number of unemployed people in the island, the latest figures from Treasury’s economic affairs division show.

At the end of January, the total number of unemployed people was 1,176, which equates to an unemployment rate of 2.6 per cent.

It compares with the previous month, when unemployment stood at 1,020 (2.3 per cent).

In January, 387 signed on and 231 signed off, giving a rise of 156 in the total registered unemployed.

Of the total unemployed, 844 are males and 332 are females.

A total of 528 vacancies were notified to the Job Centre during the month.

And at the end of the month 280 positions were still vacant and held on file.
