CHILDREN at the Beehive Kindergarten in Onchan got the first ‘taste’ of the latest stamps issue from the Post Office, during the official launch of the Bee Fauna of the Isle of Man range.

Post office and nursery staff were joined by members of the Manx Wildlife Trust and the Isle of Man Beekeepers’ association for the launch of the special edition gummed stamps that even smell of honey, as they have been printed on honey-scented paper, a first for IoM Stamps and Coins.

The collection was designed by Emma Cooke and features the work of wildlife artist Richard Lewington, and the issue is ‘dedicated to one of our most popular and beloved insects’.

The Beehive children learned that, apart from the honeybee, the island is home to approximately 15 species of bumblebee and 57 species of solitary bee, impressive considering there are only 24 species of bumblebees and around 200 solitary bees known across the entire British Isles.

The Manx Wildlife Trust’s Pauline Spicer adorned a cartoon bee outfit, while beekeeper Derek Kneale supplied chunks of honeycomb for the children to see, and explained the island has in the region of 120 beekeepers with varying numbers of colonies.

In the wild, the children learned to look out for the likes of bilberry bumblebees on the mountain moorlands in bilberry and heather flowers.

The collection costs £6.31, available from.iompostoffice.com
