TREASURY Minister and former MEA chairman Eddie Teare MHK said the island’s electricity network ranks among the best in Europe, having stood up well to continuing severe weather.

Speaking following news that the MEA has sent a team of overhead linesmen to Scotland to help restore supplies to thousands without power after the country was battered by winds gusting up to 100mph last week, Mr Teare said: ‘Investment over recent years has reinforced the MEA network and we are now seeing the reliability of supply that results from that.

‘We accept that due to our location we can expect extreme weather conditions, but it’s encouraging to note that even with the persistently strong winds we have experienced in recent months, our network performance ranks amongst the best in Europe.

‘I am delighted not only with performance of the network but of the staff as well, because investment is worthless without the enthusiastic support, commitment and co-operation of the workforce.’
