Isle of Man Food Festival draws huge crowds

THE first Isle of Man Food Festival to solely feature Manx produce sizzled with success at the Villa Marina at the weekend.

More than 40 local food and drink producers, retailers and caterers contributed to the gastronomic extravaganza which attracted at least 8,000 visitors.

During the weekend, television stars The Hairy Bikers chose the winners of the first ever Great Manx Bake-off cake baking competition, which celebrated Manx produce while raising money for the Eve Appeal Gynaecology Cancer Research Fund which aims to halve death rates in British ovarian cancer patients.

The professional category was won by former cordon bleu chef Christine McCabe of Douglas, for her professional Manx Fuschia Fairy design, and the homebaking section by Chloe Dawe, of Douglas, for her Loaghtan sheep cake.

And while half of the celebrity duo, Si King had to fly off the Island, Dave Myers stuck around on Sunday afternoon to declare Lizia Medina Quinn of Andreas the winner of the I Love Manx Chef competition for her traditional spicy Brazilian Coxinha dish.

The BBC's bearded bikers also hosted a couple of their own demonstrations using Manx produce in the Manx Food Live Theatre.

Further weekend events included Kids Kitchen Academy sessions, a Children's Cupcake Workshop, demonstrations from a wide range of the Island's chefs and food producers including Island Seafare, Moores Kipper Yard, Greeba Mushrooms, The Shore at Gansey, Isle of Man College, Isle of Man Meats and beer tasting with Okell's and Bushy's.

And guests were treated to traditional and contemporary performances by Skeeal, Caarjyn Cooidjagh, Staa, the Manx Saxophone Ensemble, Arragh and Ny Fennee, Perree Bane and the Manx Folk Dance Society on the Villa Arcade patio area.
