Isle of Man Post Office supports Blue Peter appeal

ISLE of Man Post Office is to give first class support to Blue Peter's Operation Smile appeal.

Children across Britain are being invited to turn unwanted T-shirts into decorative operation gowns for children with cleft palates in India.

Once the artwork is complete, T-shirts can be dropped off at sorting offices and post offices Island-wide, which are the collection points on the Isle of Man.

Anyone who wishes to take part should make sure their T-shirt is placed in a sealed plastic bag and clearly labelled 'Blue Peter Appeal (Smile)' before handing it in at any post office.

Operation Smile launched with its first project to the Philippines in 1982 and currently supports medical projects in 25 countries. This is Blue Peter's 48th annual appeal.

By children getting involved with Operation Smile, money that would have been spent on medical gowns can now fund further operations so more children can have their clefts repaired.

Cleft lips occur when there is a gap in someone's lip and a cleft palate is when there is a hole in the top or back of the mouth.

Sam Babb, commercial manager of parcels at Isle of Man Post Office, said: 'It came to our attention that there were no collection points for this appeal on the Isle of Man and we were more than happy to get involved.

'Once we receive the T-shirts in sealed and clearly labelled bags we will be forwarding them to team up with APC Overnight's collection (an overnight parcel delivery company covering the UK and Ireland).

'Operation Smile is a great appeal for children to get involved in and we look forward to receiving lots of Isle of Man designed T-shirts to help youngsters in India.'

Details of the appeal can be found on the Blue Peter website www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter
