The top award at this year’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music graduation went to Jason Evans, who was brought up in Colby and is an Island of of Culture ambassador.

Jason’s parents Rodney and Lorna Evans attended the graduation ceremony – held on July 2 in Marylebone parish church, London – and said the recipient of the award, the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence, is a closely guarded secret until the ceremony takes place.

‘Jason was quite surprised,’ said Rodney. ‘I do not think he expected that.’

The honour goes to the best all round student of the year, and Jason gained a first class honours Bachelor of Music degree.
This is another feather in the cap for the 22-year-old, who is principal trumpet with the Philharmonia Orchestra and plays with major orchestras throughout the world.
