July boost for harbour traffic out of Douglas

PASSENGER and vehicle traffic using Douglas harbour increased in July, according to the latest figures.

A total of 87,314 passengers and 19,887 used the harbour that month, an increase of 3.5 per cent and 4 per cent respectively on that same month last year.

Traffic for the year up to the end of July was also up on the same period in 2009.

All ferry routes except Liverpool saw an increase with the Irish services faring particularly well with Dublin up 16.1 per cent – from 4,158 to 4,826 – and Belfast up 5.6 per cent – from 5,368 to 5,666.

Heysham saw a 3.5 per cent rise from 24,963 to 25,834 but Liverpool dipped by 0.9 per cent from 46,889 to 46,491.

Department of Infrastructure member for harbours David Callister MLC said: 'Overall it was a good month with growth in both passenger and vehicle numbers.

'There was a slight increase shown on the UK routes with a higher rate of growth on the Irish routes.

'The Dublin route performed particularly well. However, overall the Irish routes still only account for 12 per cent of the total passenger traffic for the month.'

This must mean that the man in the hollowed out pumpkin finally managed to get over to the Island?

Have they included in the figures all those bobbiing out in an inner tube or on rudimentary floatation devices, known as the Manx 'boat people', taking their chance on washing up on a friendly shore and being given succour and comfort ? These desperate folk with nothing left to lose are finding life too hard in their native land and are taking their few belongings and joining the growing millions of economic migrants and political refugees that sail today's seven seas. I doubt many of them will make Miami. Their simple craft are not registered anywhere and pay no harbour dues on exit. Have they found a loophole ?

So the Harbour traffic is up and the Airport figures are down ? Let's hope the airlines see this and put on some cheap deals to get people flying again
