Lifeboat called out to rescue men from Calf

Port Erin RNLI’s lifeboat was yesterday called into action after a report of people in difficulty on the Calf of Man.

The crew were paged just as Sunday’s charity raft races were concluding and the boat was launched minutes later.

The lifeboat collected members of Port Erin coastguard cliff team and their equipment. They were taken to the Calf of Man and the rescue gear was unloaded at Cow Harbour while the cliff team were then taken round to the south of the islet where they were able to get ashore from a makeshift landing point.

There were two men that had climbed down a cliff near to the Burroo to what they considered was an ideal fishing spot. However, later they found they were unable to climb back up, becoming stuck on a ledge.

After dropping the cliff team off, the lifeboat crew positioned the lifeboat at the bottom of the rock face whilst the coastguards lowered two cliff rescue men down to the stranded men. The anglers were found to be a bit shaken but were in good health and the decision was made to recover them back up the cliff.

The lifeboat then returned to Cow Harbour where they collected the two casualties and the coastguard team returning them safely back to Port Erin jetty.
