Light aircraft ditches in sea on its way to Isle of Man

A FEMALE pilot from the Island had a lucky escape after the light aircraft she was flying ditched in the Irish Sea on its way to the Isle of Man.

Air traffic control at Ronaldsway received a mayday alert from the pilot just after midday today (Wednesday), saying she was experiencing engine trouble.

The Manx-registered Piper Alpha PA31, which had taken off from Guernsey with just the one person on board, subsequently ditched in the sea 22 miles off the Blackpool coast.

A stand-by vessel for the Morecambe Bay gas field, the Vos Pathfinder, rescued the downed pilot from the sea.

She was flown for a check up to Blackpool Victoria Hospital by a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley.

A spokesman for Liverpool Coastguard said the pilot was unharmed and feeling well. 'She managed to ditch the aricraft successfully. She has had a rather lucky escape,' he added.
