A St John’s man has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a woman by dangerous driving.

Donovan Bradley Kitching, aged 30, admitted causing the death of Gwen Valentine, a 62-year-old mother-of-three from Winchester.

Ms Valentine died when she was struck by a car driven by Kitching on the Tholt-y-Will road on April 26.

Kitching has previously pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and possession of amphetamines and will be sentenced for all the offences on October 23 at 10am.

Deemster Alastair Montgomerie said: ‘You will need to steel yourself for what is going to be a substantial period of custody.’

‘Yes, I appreciate that,’ answered Kitching.

Ms Valentine, who was visiting the island and was preparing for her wedding in June, had been retired for just over a week and her first grandchild was not yet a year old.

A social inquiry report will now be prepared in advance of sentencing and the prosecution and defence will both outline their sentencing recommendations.

A charge of taking a vehicle without consent has been withdrawn.
