A one minute’s silence and memorial concert is planned for the 41st anniversary of the Summerland tragedy.
It’s the brainchild of Tina Brennen, who organised a petition to stop the sale of the site and have it dedicated to the 50 people who died, and now wants to see annual memorial events.
She said: ‘Nearly 2,000 signatures were collected and it seemed everyone was keen to tell their stories and connections with Summerland and the fire.
‘They wanted to be heard, and my hope is that by means of the Summerland Memorial Concert and holding a minute’s silence at 7.30pm, Saturday, August 2, on Douglas promenade opposite the Summerland site and releasing 50 white balloons, we can gather together in a simple expression of shared remembrance.’
The Summerland Memorial Concert – Songs for Summerland will be held at Amber Bar, Loch Promenade, from 9pm.
Performing will be Chris Gray, Nick Barlow, Matt Creer and Tony & Dickie.
Tina said: ‘The aim is to give locals and visitors the chance to remember those who went into Summerland for a night of fun entertainment but in the space of 25 minutes had their lives taken from them.’
Concert tickets – £10, proceeds to Alder Hey Children’s Burns Unit and the Children’s Burns Trust – are available at www.etickets.im/etickets.asp; Peter Norris Music, Douglas; Shakti Man, Ramsey; Thompson Travel, Port Erin and Celtic Gold, Peel.
