Mountain Road closed

THE Mountain Road is closed due to ice and snow.

Police made the decision early this morning (Sunday, December 27) after wintry showers overnight.

The road is closed between Creg-Ny-Baa and Ramsey Hairpin due to hazardous driving conditions.

Specialist officers in conjunction with the Department of Transport are routinely checking the state of the roads on the mountain so that they can be opened again as soon as possible.

The roads may appear to be usable at the point of closing the snow is deeper on higher ground, police say.

Acting Sergeant Paul Kemp said: 'Unfortunately, it would appear that the public are not adhering to the roads closure and are still being found on the closed roads.

'Whilst the police have sympathy for those having to find alternative routes due to the roads closure, it is an offence to drive on closed roads and such is the degree of the police's concern for the safety of the public, any person found contravening the road closure could well find themselves being prosecuted which can result in a fine.'
