Automatic number plate recognition could be extended to all civic amenity sites in the Isle of Man to prevent their abuse by producers of commercial waste.
Infrastructure Minister David Cretney told the House of Keys that a number plate recognition system introduced at the Northern Civic Amenity site had been very effective in preventing commercial waste being dumped there.
He said he could see no problem in extending the system to the other sites at a cost of £9,000 for each.
Mr Cretney said his department believed the use of such systems by local authorities was lawful but it was in the process of seeking legal advice to confirm this.
The system would not be extended to other tips until the legality had been confirmed.
