One of the London 2012 Olympic torches has made its way to the Manx Museum.

The donation comes courtesy of one of the island’s torch bearers, Ian ‘Wagga’ Williams, and Lloyds TSB.

The firm contacted Manx National Heritage following the relay, which reached the island on June 2, and agreed to sponsor the purchase of Wagga’s torch for the national collections.

A total of 38 torch bearers carried the flame in the island, where it also travelled by lifeboat, horse tram and motorcycle sidecar.

Wagga, who is the rugby development manager for the Sports Development Institute, carried the torch on the Onchan leg of its journey

Peter Reid, Lloyds TSB island director, said: ‘Lloyds TSB are delighted to have been part of this legacy and we are proud to be able to support the donation of Ian’s Olympic torch.’

Edmund Southworth, director of Manx National Heritage, said: ‘The torch will form an important part of the national collections and our memory of London 2012.

‘It will be held in the care of MNH for both present and future generations to enjoy. We plan to exhibit the torch in suitable locations around the island and hope this will inspire more people to become involved in sport.’
