Police are investigating a ‘malicious and nasty email money scam’, which involves threats of violence being made in an email to the recipient.
The includes demands for a significant amount of money to prevent those threats from being enacted.
Police advise any one who receives a similar email, not to reply, or send money in response, but to ensure that they install appropriate virus protection software on their computers and electronic gadgets.
Investigating officer Constable Kelly Wilkinson said: ‘I’d like to hear from any person who may have received similar emails. I would urge members of the public not to worry about this scam, but to simply be proactive by contacting the police and reporting it.
‘I would strongly recommend that any person who receives such an email, not reply to it. The police are taking this matter seriously and are actively working towards identifying the original sender.’
