READING SCHEME LAUNCHED AT ONCHAN LIBRARY
SPACE is the theme of a reading initiative launched at Onchan Library, Willow House.
The scheme which is now in its fourth year, is aimed at encouraging children to read books during the long summer holiday period. The library chooses a theme each year and this time it is space, the title being The Reading Planet.
Last year 200 children were involved in the competition.
Onchan chief librarian Pam Hand said: 'In the past we have had a reading safari, a reading relay and a reading carnival.
'This time we went for space and all the literature surrounding the competition has this theme, although the books the children read don't necessarily have to be connected with astronomy or space travel. This has now become an established and popular event.
'If the children read six books they will receive a space frieze and stickers while those reading 10 books qualify for a medal and certificate.'
The library has also been organising colouring and robot making competitions. Schools and play groups have been taking part and at the end of the summer the robots will go on display in the library.
In keeping with the theme Onchan Commissioner Howard Parkin, press officer of the Isle of Man Astronomical Society, attended the project launch, sponsored by Isle of Man Bank, and brought along a telescope and other aids to help explain the mysteries of space to the children.
Face painter Jane Swales decorated young faces with rockets and other designs relating to space travel.
Pam Hand continued: 'The children thoroughly enjoy the competition and parents are pleased to see reading being encouraged during school holidays.'
