Red phone box in Hospice Isle of Man auction

GUESTS to Hospice Isle of Man's annual dinner dance in October will have the chance to bid for a rather unusual item.

Manx Telecom has donated a red telephone box to the hospice to auction at the event.

Manx Telecom managing director Chris Hall said: 'Manx Telecom is always keen to support this worthwhile local charity and by donating a red phone box we felt it was a fun and innovative way of showing this.'

The phone box, which weighs about three quarters of a ton, used to be in service in Mines Road, in Laxey.

Manx Telecom access network and planning manager Tony Quayle said that restored phone boxes had become collectors' items which were sold for as much as 4,800.

The phone box is a K6 kiosk, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George the Fifth in 1935. The model was the first to be installed across the UK.

And they are a familiar sight, not only in the UK and the Island, but also across the world in countries such as Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar.

The black tie event is taking place at the Hilton Hotel, in Douglas, on October 1.

The guest speaker will be PR professional Max Clifford.

The main fundraising event of the year, at which Lloyd Grossman spoke last year, is now in its 27th year.

Mr Clifford has been in the business of public relations, protecting and promoting a wide variety of clients, for more than 40 years.

He made his name early in his career promoting an unwanted band called The Beatles.

The evening will start at 7.30pm with VIP drinks, followed by a five course dinner, after which Mr Clifford will speak.

There will be a raffle and an auction on the night.

Tickets priced at 65 are available from the Hospice fundraising department on 647434.

The hospice needs to raise 3.5 million a year.
