Castletown MHK Richard Ronan has agreed to step down from his role as political member with responsibility for retail in the Department of Economic Development.

He said his constituents’ concerns over planning applications to convert commercial units at Callow’s Yard into flats took precedence over his retail role in the department.

A public meeting this week attended by 170 residents unanimously opposed the applications.

‘As MHK for Castletown I am deeply involved in the regeneration of the town and a strong campaigner for localism,’ he said.

‘I am determined to fight to restore a vital, varied and sustainable business and leisure community in this beautiful, historic town.

‘Recently I have found my constituency mandate in this matter taking precedence over my role in the department as the political member with delegated responsibility for the retail sector.’

He said it did not impact on his other responsibilities in the department.
