Ruby’s charity grand
CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISER: Three-year-old Ruby Sherry with mum Becky Livesey and Aunty Elly Livesey
THREE-YEAR-OLD Ruby Sherry raised an amazing £1,000 for the Isle of Man Newspapers/Manx Diabetic Group Pumps 4 Kids campaign with a hotpot and band night.
The event, held at Ramsey Rugby Club, saw a popular performance from the Caution Runners band.
The youngster, who has type 1 diabetes and uses the kind of pump for which Pumps 4 Kids is raising money, was helped in the organisation by mum Becky Livesey and aunt Elly Livesey.
‘It was fantastic,’ said Becky, who lives with Ruby at The Bretney Estate, Jurby.
‘We got our pump in April and it’s been absolutely marvellous for us. It gives you a little bit more freedom.’
She said Ruby was on needle therapy for a year and the family were relieved to be able to switch to the less invasive pump option.
‘Injecting your little girl when they are only two, for a mum that is terrible, it is horrible.’
Pumps 4 Kids is raising money to eradicate the waiting list for pump therapy, which replaces the need for daily injections, therefore transforming the life of a child.
The pump unit delivers insulin into the body without the need for multiple daily injections. It is carried outside the body and holds a reservoir of insulin attached to a long, thin piece of tubing with a cannula at one end that sits under the skin. A small amount of insulin is administered continuously and is topped up manually at meal times. This relatively new technology mimics more closely the action of the pancreas in delivering insulin than multiple daily injections.
