Assessment results rating three of the island’s primary schools as generally good with some areas considered outstanding are being shared with parents.

Cronk-y-Berry, St John’s and Kewaigue schools were the first three to be externally validated in the current round of schools assessment which finishes in summer 2016.

The Schools’ self-review and Evaluation process will involve all of the island’s primary and secondary schools, each of which undertakes a self assessment in key areas such as teaching and learning, attainment, assessment, attitudes and values, care and its partnerships with parents and the wider community.

Each category is rated as a significant strength, good, satisfactory or requiring action.

Each school is then visited by inspectors from an independent agency - World Class Learning - whose assessors conduct lesson observations, examine paperwork and speak to staff, parents and pupils. At the end of the process the schools’ self assessment is validated or, any unsatisfactory areas can be addressed.

If any areas do require attention this will trigger an action plan by the school and a reassessment process.

Education director Martin Barrow said: ‘The main aim of the validation process is to provide professional support to schools to help them to refine their own judgements. When a school has been involved in this validation process, they will take the opportunity to share key outcomes with parents.’

At Cronk-y-Berry, teaching and learning was found to be good overall and in some lessons it was very good or outstanding. Inspectors also agreed the school offered effective support and professional development to improve teaching and learning. According to the report, teachers plan lessons and sequences of lessons well and introduce activities that stimulate discussion and gain pupils’ interest and curiosity.

At Kewaigue, attainment in English and mathematics was good in the Foundation Stage and satisfactory in Key Stages 1 and 2. Most pupils achieved the expected level or above for their year group in reading and writing at the end of last school year but attainment in mathematics was lower so the school has identified a need to improve pupils’ number skills.

Teaching and learning at St John’s school was good overall with high teacher expectations. Pupils were engaged by challenging activities. Teachers provided good opportunities to apply learning in areas that interest pupils.
