SEABIRDS FOUND COVERED IN OIL
THIS great northern diver was found washed up on the beach at Port Erin – the victim of mystery oil pollution.
MSPCA officers at Ard Jerkyll have received a series of calls about oil-covered seabirds since Friday from beaches around the Island.
But the coastguard and wildlife officers at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have had no reports about any oil spillage.
On Friday, two great northern divers – a regular winter visitor to the Island's coasts – were found with their feathers caked in oil on the shoreline at Peel and Port Erin.
Another seabird, a guillemot, was found the same day at Peel.
The following day, there was a further report of another oil-covered bird spotted floating underneath the pier at Ramsey but it had vanished before officers could rescue it.
And on Sunday another great northern diver was found at Derbyhaven, again covered in oil.
