The last time Baldrine’s budding bodybuilder Karl Bruder made headlines, he was bringing home a novice-class trophy and seeking sponsorship to make the next level.
Now having made ripples in bodybuilding circles he has attracted a top sponsorship package and is preparing for a chance at Mr Universe qualification.
With the new nickname ‘Iron’ Bruder, the 30-year-old is now the face of fitness consultants The Muscle Authority, owned by successful bodybuilder Barny Du Plessis.
‘Barny wants to take me to the top, that’s his goal,’ said Karl, who competes in Mr Cheshire on Saturday, hoping to hit prime condition for the big National Amateur Bodybuilders’ Association show on September 21.
‘It’s the highest level of British bodybuilding, a big difference to what I’ve competed at before,’ said Karl about the NABBA show. ‘First and second place qualify for Mr Universe. If I get there I’ll be representing the Isle of Man!’
How does he rate his chances?
‘I’ve been told I’m good enough, but it’s 50/50, those guys are good. I’m up against a two-time Mr England, and we’ve been speaking a lot. There’s great camaraderie in bodybuilding,’ said Karl.
Under the wing of Du Plessis, Iron Bruder has stepped into a whole new world of training.
‘Barny gives me all his secrets now, all his ins and outs,’ he said. Other help has come from Carrefour gym in Douglas which offered Karl membership, and access to the studio spaces to rehearse his routine, choreographed by friend Leonie Ward. There’s also on-site physio from the likes of PSM Clinic’s Sam Brennan for pre-event massages. Has the step up in standard been draining?
‘It has become a lifestyle now, and it’s got to be, to keep bettering myself,’ said Karl. ‘I’m eating 20 eggs a day, and mackerel for lunch. It sounds like a lot but it’s just an omelette the size of a pizza. Everyone can eat a pizza!’
Karl thanked his wife Laura for her ‘100 per cent support’. ‘It’s not possible without the help,’ he said. ‘I have faith in myself, and I think there’s a future for me.’
