PUBLIC recognition is to be given to St Catherine’s Drive in Douglas – the road on which the Bee Gees lived as children.

Douglas Council has agreed for ‘Childhood Home of the Bee Gees’ to be added to the street sign for the road when it is replaced, as the current one is missing.

In addition, a plaque will be mounted on the wall of the Gibb family’s former home, 50 St Catherine’s Drive.

At last week’s meeting, council leader David Christian said all councillors applauded the move, which followed a suggestion from a member of the public that the connection between the group and St Catherine’s Drive be publicly noted.

He asked whether easy-to-replace vinyl lettering would be used for the sign, saying: ‘I can see it disappearing on a regular basis and appearing on bedroom walls.’

Environmental services advisory committee chairman Ritchie McNicholl said plans were yet to be drawn up for the sign, but added: ‘Hopefully it will be secured in a way it can’t be removed.’

He said it coincided with the soon to be released album, 50 St Catherine’s Drive, recorded by Robin Gibb before his death.

And Isle of Man Post Office is to launch a set of stamps in April to celebrate his life and career.

A memorial was recently unveiled to the trio in Redcliffe, South East Queensland, Australia, which was home to the brothers after the Gibb family moved from Chorlton in Manchester in 1958.

Bee Gees Way is around 70m long and 10m wide and chronicles the Gibb brothers’ musical career. It also features a 1.8m statue.

The only suviving member, Barry Gibb, was heavily involved in the project and conducted the official opening on Valentine’s Day.
