Swine flu: symptoms so mild many don't recall them
THERE are isolated instances of people contracting swine flu, but another peak in cases is not expected, Isle of Man public health director Dr Parameswaran Kishore said.
All contingency plans drawn up by the Manx Government in case of a further outbreak were stood down at the end of January after a month had passed since the last recorded case.
Cases in the UK, Europe and North America had also dropped significantly by this time.
The swine flu virus outbreak last year in the Isle of Man saw 59 suspected swine flu admissions to Noble's Hospital and of this number 20 were confirmed positive.
Dr Kishore said these patients recovered thanks to the excellent care they received.
He explained that while any peak in cases had passed, and the prediction was that there won't be a third wave of the virus, there were still isolated cases. The number of these might increase in the autumn/winter.
'We are keeping an eye on it,' he said. 'We have revised our vaccination approach and will release details of that shortly.'
Dr Kishore revealed that after swine flu cases dropped off in England following the outbreak there last year, testing was carried out to detect who had developed antibodies as a result of having had swine flu. This showed that in some parts of the country 80-90 per cent had had the infection, but not all had felt ill.
'It's so mild some people don't remember having the symptoms,' said Dr Kishore, who said that in the Island, as well, there would have been more cases than were recorded.
