TALK WILL BE OUT OF THIS WORLD

THE 'Voice of Jodrell Bank' is visiting the Island later this month.

Radio astronomer Ian Morison is the guest speaker at the IoM Astronomical Society's annual meeting, in Onchan Church Hall, on September 28.

Ian is well known in astronomical circles and has been an enthusiast of the subject since an early age, making his first telescope at the age of 12 with lenses given to him by his optician. Having studied physics, maths and astronomy at Oxford he became a radio astronomer at the Jodrell Bank Observatory and teaches astronomy and cosmology at the University of Manchester.

For over 25 years he has also taught observational astronomy to many hundreds of adult students in the North West of England.

An active amateur optical astronomer, he is a council member and past president of the Society for Popular Astronomy in the United Kingdom.

He contributes astronomy articles and reviews for various astronomical publications.

Ian will be speaking about recent advances in SETI,the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence.

His illustrated talk will start at 8pm, following the annual meeting, which starts at 7.30pm.

Members of the public are welcome to attend his presentation.

Refreshments will be available.

The society normally meets at 8pm on the first Thursday of every month at its observatory in Foxdale.
