Tickets go on sale for balloon race
WHAT would you do if someone offered you a parachute and then told you the ropes had been cut?
Actually, it’s not as bad as it sounds!
That’s according to members of the Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes.
They have come up with an unusual way to raise awareness about the scheme – as well as a novel way of raising funds.
They have decided to stage a balloon race, after the son of one of the members asked if they would be able to make use of a de-commissioned RAF parachute.
Tickets are being sold at £2 each.
And people are being invited to write a dream, wish or memory on their ticket before it is released into the sky.
The balloon release will take place on Sunday, September 30, at 4pm.
Members of the public are invited to go and watch the balloons being released from the Millennium Playing Fields in Crosby.
Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes try to improve the quality of life and well-being of many older people, who would otherwise be isolated, lonely and unable to participate in local community activities.
Volunteers offer support and friendship – visiting and offering friendship and moral support to people within the comfort and security of their own homes.
There are six schemes providing older people’s services throughout the island.
They are based in the north, west, north Douglas, south Douglas, Onchan and Laxey and Lonan areas.
More than 400 people are befriended by trained and supported volunteers, who often become a vital lifeline to them.
The first scheme was set up in 2000 in St John’s.
The latest scheme to launch was based in the political constituency of south Douglas earlier this year, thanks to the support from Isle of Man Residential Homes (2009) who provided the funding.
It followed the successful launch of a scheme in north Douglas last year.
Each scheme has its own local management committee elected from the local community, which works in partnership with government, local authorities, business and local people.
If you would like to buy a balloon ticket or chat with someone about becoming a member or volunteer for any of the schemes, contact Jan Farrell on 342602 for more information.
