WAR HORSE: Joey, the equine hero of Steve Spielbergs epic War Horse meeting a fan in Sheffield

A HORSE that played War Horse was in Castletown for the filming of Belle, the period drama being made in the harbour area of the town.

The film is set in the 1760s and follows the true story of Dido Belle, a young mixed-race girl, played by Gugu Mbatha Raw.

Filming is taking place in Castletown, where the harbourside has been transformed into the dockside in 18th century Bristol, and the west of the island before it moves to Pinewood Studios in Oxford and London.

The horse, called Sultan, was one of 13 different horses that played the part of Joey in the Steven Spielberg film.

Castletown commissioner Peter Hill-Heaton said: ‘I went to take a picture of the horses and wagon to give to my granddaughter (Charlotte, 15), she is heavily into horses. He (Sultan) was tied up by the van. The lady standing with him said he was in War Horse, I’m not sure if he was War Horse or one of the horses.’

The company that provides horses for War Horse and Belle is The Devil’s Horsemen and a spokeswoman confirmed Sultan was in the island and involved in filming Belle.

Sultan was also selected to walk on the red carpet for the War Horse film’s premiere in London in January and was filmed with Mr Spielberg and lead actor Jeremy Irvine (who played Albert).

She said: ‘It’s no problem for them [the horses] to travel to the Isle of Man, it’s not too far. They travel all over the world, to Croatia, Malta.

‘They’re also going to Belfast to film Game of Thrones.’

Sultan is in the island until October 10 and there is more filming in Castletown tomorrow (Tuesday, October 9).
