Property tycoons dominate the Isle of Man Rich List 2014.
The top three, headed by John Whittaker, all have significant property holdings and are among seven island residents to be included in this year’s Sunday Times Rich List, which is published in a special 116-page edition of The Sunday Times Magazine this weekend.
Mr Whittaker is the only island billionaire and is ranked 42nd overall with a wealth of £2,300m.
His Peel Group is the developer of MediaCityUK in Salford and the Trafford Centre in Manchester and has plans to build a new container terminal in Liverpool. Whittaker is also the majority shareholder of Pinewood Shepperton Studios. He lives in the Isle of Man and owns 75 per cent of the £3bn Peel Holdings business.
Jim Mellon, in second place on the Isle of Man Rich List and ranked 117th overall, has seen his investments grow by £50m in the past year to stand now at £850m. He has a substantial property portfolio in Germany and is investing in biotechnology companies.
Ramsey Park hotel owner Trevor Hemmings has a fortune of £625m, with assets in his Northern Trust property group and Trust Inns pub business worth £163.5m. The 78-year-old is owner of Preston North End football club and has owned two Grand National-winning horses. He is ranked 164th overall in the Rich List.
The others in the island Rich List are Mark Shuttleworth, with a fortune of £160m, John Morphet new to the list with wealth of £135m, Leonard Polonsky
with £100m and George Moore and family with £95m.
