Work has started on the construction of a new custody block at police headquarters in Douglas.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson MHK was on site last week to see local contractor Island Drainage and Groundworks Ltd start work on the initial phase of the £2.8m scheme.

Scheduled for completion in March 2015, it will replace the existing facilities which have reached the end of their operational life. Capacity will be increased from 10 to 20 cells and conditions improved for detainees, police officers, advocates, health care professionals and disabled people.
