THE opening ceremony of the 2011 Isle of Man Commonwealth Youth Games will be staged in the Bowl National Sports Stadium tonight from 7.15pm and will be streamed live on the BBC Isle of Man website.

The ceremony, produced by outdoor performance specialists Walk The Plank, features more than 225 dancers, musicians and actors.

It will blend the best of Manx culture with references to the five continents of the visiting athletes. Manx sea god Mannanan Mac Lir will welcome the crowd. Historical references include the Viking invasions while modern themes include the ‘Spirit of Youth’, featuring gymnasts and parkour specialists, before the show reaches a climax with spectacular special effects.
